Is it impossible to be lonely, or is loneliness an impossibly difficult thing?
In the first part of this book, Chinle Miller wanders the desert and mountains with her dogs, exploring nature and an inner life of solitude, until an event happens that shakes her life to its core—her best-friend and cousin Janie is killed by a grizzly in Alaska.
Grieving and becoming more and more fearful and obsessed with bears, Chinle heads north, stopping in the Yukon, then finally making her way to Alaska’s Chugach Range, where her cousin was killed.
There, after learning more about Janie’s death, she begins a new journey, one that takes her to British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest for a life-saving encounter with a Kermode, or spirit bear, as well as meeting a First Nations native who reveals what she must know to find her true home.
Half-journal and half story, this unique book will take you to the deserts of Utah, the high peaks of Colorado, the wilderness of the Yukon and Alaska, and into the depths of the Coastal Mountain rainforests of British Columbia.
You’ll find that, in a way, it’s impossible to be alone, as we’re always surrounded by life—and yet, as humans, we do get lonely, and it’s an impossibly difficult thing, but a condition with a cure, for, as Chinle writes, “When you stand in the immensity of the natural world and realize how utterly insignificant you are, only then are you truly free.”
The Impossibility of Loneliness The Search for Home Chinle Miller
I had read all of the Bud Sumway mysteries up to this point and looked forward to Chinle's newest book about lonliness and home. The book is actually about many things. It's about understanding what home is and where you find it. It's also about loss and fear. The loss of a close friend named Janie and a beloved dog named Moki and how Chinle struggles to cope with both. But it's also about fear of the unknown and mortality itself.I've spent several decades hiking and backpacking, mostly by myself. Not having kids has given me the freedom to work less and spend more time in nature. That's why I could relate to her fears about bears and whatever else resides in the woods. I overcame most of my fears long ago through a better understanding of those animals that I feared most. I've encountered bears a dozen times, cougars on three occasions and quite a few rattlesnakes and none have resulted in a terrible event but rather left me mostly awed by nature. I have retained some fear which is necessary inorder survive when out in nature but the key is not letting it become an irrational fear. Following Chinle on her voyage to Alaska reminded me of the power fear can have, especially when you're alone.
Her fascinating journey will keep you riveted as she encounters adventures along the way and discoveries within.

The Impossibility of Loneliness The Search for Home Chinle Miller Reviews
If you like the Utah desert, if you like the Far North, if you like the outdoors, and if you like good writing, this is a book for you (and me).
This book is beautifully written. The author has a way of painting a picture with her words that draws you in and allows effortless visualization. The locals vary - Southwest Colorado, Eastern Utah, Northwestern Canada, and Alaska - each painted in words.
Even better than the physical descriptions, however, are the emotional pictures that Chinle paints. The writing really is exquisite - a poignant and hopeful tale masterfully told. I will be reading this book again.
Very good read. I was hoping the author would come to a good conclusion. This book did not disappoint.
